Order of Oranje-Nassau order merit med in silver

Berichtdoor Forecmal » 18 Aug 2014, 09:09

Dear gentlemen,

I have two merit medals of the order of Oranje-Nassau but in different sizes. The civil one is 30mm and the military is 27mm and the crowns are different in shape and design.
Now to the questions. Why different sizes and can one tell who the maker is on just looking at the crowns? There are no hallmarks. Also from which period are the medals?
Any help or information is valuable.

Thank you.

Hello Foremal,

I am not an expert on this subject, but I may be able to help you. The 30mm civil one is probably a Portugese manufacturing, which where made during WWII, but could be a private make either.(The private made ones usually have a silver mark in them) The smaller one(27mm) is the standard issue between 1900-1996, and usually have hallmarks. It is not possible to detemine the manufacturer by its crown. Usually the hallmarks are stamped in the rim of the medal or just between the crown and the coin. It can also be stamped in the ring, maybe you can check those for marks. Hope this helps!

regards
Sjors
