Captain D.L. Jones MC Bronzen Kruis

Berichtdoor Roel » 06 Jul 2009, 10:25

1945 Rhine Crossing MC and Netherlands Bronze Cross Gallantry Group attributable to Captain D.L. Jones, 77th Assault Squadron, Royal Engineers. Military Cross, dated 1945, 1939-45 Star, France and Germany Star, Defence Medal, War Medal 39-45, and Netherlands Bronze Cross, all unnamed as issued. ‘Captain Douglas Lawrence Jones, 77th Assault Squadron, Royal Engineers in support of 1st Commando Brigade. At 2200 hrs on the 23rd March 1945, Captain Jones was commanding a Troop of Buffalos in support of the 1st SS Brigade assault on the Grav Insel – 2 miles west of Wesel. He was in personal command of the first flight of Buffalos to cross the Rhine at this point. Enemy reaction was rapid and effective and he lead his troops across the river into a hail of mortar and shell fire. The craft next to him received a direct hit and caught fire, and his own craft was severely damaged by a near miss, but he continued unswervingly, exactly to the pre-arranged landing place and put down his craft load. After abandoning his now useless craft, Captain Jones continued to command his troop in ferrying succeeding waves of Commandos across the river, carrying on with his task regardless of enemy fire. He displayed courage and determination of the highest order throughout. By his actions he contributed greatly to the success of the assault, and was an ever present inspiration to all ranks who were working with him’ Included with the group are, his original ‘flimsy’ copy of the MC citation, two copies of the Bronze Cross award certificate (one in dutch and one in English), lid of OHMS box for campaign medals (name clearly visible, but address crossed-out), National Archives copy of MC citation, London Gazette entries for MC and Bronze Cross (supplement issue numbers 37396 & 38018), two original small photos marked on rear, ‘The Rhine’ showing military craft crossing. Copies (CD and Paper) of the 77th Assault Squadron diaries for this action, which mention Captain Jones by name. The 77th Assault Squadron RE was formed in 1943 as part of the 1st Assault Brigade of the 79th Armoured Division under Major General Sir Percy Hobart, concentrating on the development and use of specialised assault armour and transport. Captain Jones was awarded the MC for his part in ‘Operation Widgeon’ in the leading Rhine Crossing Commando assault action against the key German communications centre at Wesel. Mounted for wear (6) Nearly extremely fine

Heb hetzelfde.
